The geography, briefly
San Diego International and the San Diego Convention Center are both on the downtown waterfront, a few miles apart. Under normal traffic it is a short drive, with most downtown hotels sitting between the two.
That proximity is why this trip is usually easy for one traveller and surprisingly awkward for eighty. Distance is not the constraint; gathering people and staging vehicles is.
If you are travelling alone or with one or two colleagues
A pre-arranged premium SUV transfer is the least friction: the pickup is coordinated, the trip is direct, and luggage is not a negotiation. It is the usual choice for speakers, executives and anyone who needs to be at the hall at a fixed time.
The alternative is a taxi or rideshare from the airport's designated pickup area. That is workable for a single traveller with a carry-on and a flexible schedule. It gets less workable with bags, with colleagues, or with a session to make.
If you are exhibiting
Exhibitors are the group most often caught out. Move-in windows do not align with attendee arrival patterns, crews arrive before the show floor opens, and materials travel with them.
Plan the crew transfer separately from the attendee transfer, and say in your request that you are exhibiting, including your move-in window and what is travelling with the team.
If you are moving a group
Groups need a plan rather than a ride. The three decisions that matter: how the arrival spread breaks into pickup windows, whether the group goes to the venue or hotels first, and how many vehicles each window needs.
One vehicle waiting for a group spread across four hours is the most common and most expensive mistake. Rotating vehicles across windows almost always beats it.

Do not forget the return
Departure day compresses. Everyone tends to leave in the hours after the final session, which is exactly when demand for vehicles peaks across the whole event.
If you request only the inbound transfer, you will be arranging the outbound one at the worst possible time. Quote both together.
