San Diego Convention Center

San Diego Convention Center transportation

The convention center sits on the downtown waterfront, walking distance from some hotels and a genuine drive from others. That split is the whole transportation problem — and it is the one we plan around for planners, exhibitors, attendees and VIP guests.

Why downtown geography drives the shuttle plan

Guests in the Marina District and parts of the Gaslamp Quarter can often walk to the convention center. Guests in Mission Valley, Old Town, Point Loma, Coronado, La Jolla or near the beaches cannot — and those are exactly the properties large room blocks spill into once downtown fills.

A good program does not shuttle everyone. It identifies which properties genuinely need service, groups them into routes, and puts the vehicle count where the attendees actually are. That keeps buses full, headways short, and the plan explainable to attendees.

Transportation by role

Convention planners

A single shuttle schedule with vehicle counts per window, plus one contact when the program changes on site.

Corporate groups

Dedicated transportation for a company's attendees, separate from the general attendee shuttle.

Attendees

Fixed pickup points and predictable windows around session starts and closes.

Exhibitors

Move-in and move-out transportation, plus crew transfers outside published shuttle hours.

Speakers

Timed private transportation so a keynote is never dependent on a shared loop.

VIP guests & event staff

Premium SUV transportation for guests, and early or late runs for staff building or breaking down the show.

Movements we coordinate for convention center events

  • SAN airport transfers on arrival and departure days
  • Hotel-to-convention-center loops across multiple downtown and outlying properties
  • Convention shuttle service timed to session starts and closes
  • Premium SUV transportation for speakers, executives and VIP guests
  • Group transportation for company delegations attending together
  • Multi-stop event transportation to off-site dinners, receptions and venues
  • Exhibitor and event-staff movements outside attendee hours

Loading, staging and timing

Large vehicles cannot simply stop wherever an attendee expects. Bus staging around a busy waterfront venue is constrained, so pickup and drop-off points are agreed in advance and published to attendees as part of the schedule — not improvised on show day.

Timing is set from the program itself: vehicles positioned before the first session, headways tightened around session closes, and the evening plan built for the actual end of the day rather than the printed one.

Questions

Common questions

Which hotels usually need convention shuttle service?

Properties outside comfortable walking distance of the waterfront — commonly Mission Valley, Old Town, Point Loma, Coronado, La Jolla and beach-area hotels. Marina District and nearby Gaslamp properties often do not need service at all.

Can you coordinate airport transfers as part of the same program?

Yes. SAN arrival and departure transfers are usually quoted and coordinated with the shuttle program so the connections are not lost.

Can you provide dedicated transportation for our company's attendees?

Yes. A company delegation can have its own vehicles and schedule, independent of any general attendee shuttle.

How are pickup points decided?

They are agreed in advance with the hotels and venue, taking staging restrictions into account, and then published to attendees with the schedule.

Can you support exhibitor move-in and move-out?

Yes, including crew transfers at hours that fall outside the attendee shuttle window.

How early should convention transportation be requested?

As early as your room blocks and program allow. Convention weeks concentrate demand on the same operators and dates, so early requests give a more accurate plan.
